Crossing Timeshare

Can we still get out of a timeshare purchase?
We BOTH went to the presentation- I declined to sign the contract and only my husband signed–we were suppose to pay $1000 up front–they took 3 post dated checks—and so far, only cashed one. Can I stop payment on the other two (The 1st was only $100) and tell them since I didn’t sign it isn’t a valid contract and we want out? Their financing will not go into effect until after the deposit is paid. They crossed out parts in the contract– with no initialing to verify the omission of those terms……I want to stop payments and tell them the truth- we don’t want it due to a family emergency- my daughter is very ill. Do we need a lawyer? I assume they can only sue us for the $1000 since if you walk away from buying a home- you only lose your down payment.
Many states have a rescission period possibility (buyer remorse) required ,, particularly on time shares which are often sold without full disclosures. Beyond that, no time share mill is going to come after you in court if you cancel your checks remaining. hopefully, the gift you got should make you feel OK about the lost hundred if your state has no buyer remorse regulations.
